Bolgatanga, Ghana

Ghana was my first country to visit in West Africa and after multiple visits I was able to see much of the Atlantic coastal countries including Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Senegal, Western Sahara, and Morocco (North Africa). After visiting so many different places, encountering other cultures, languages, foods and customs…visiting West Africa was a fulfilling experience. As much as many other countries and cultures have landmarks, sites and many sights to see. West Africa, particularly Ghana, produces a different type of experience when visiting because I find the value in such a visit is within the culture. The people of Ghana and other West African countries are filled with an amazing spirit that feels more welcoming to me than my native land of USA. Lands that were used and abused by colonizers, governments still new compared to their European and western neighbors, and remnants of civil war (Sierra Leone), enslavement and other atrocities do not damper the African spirit. It is a place that I desire to call home because it just feels really good to be in a place surrounded by people who look like you.
